Star Fleet Ball Cancellation
To my very dear chums: It is with a heavy heart that I tell you I'll not be joining you this year for the Star Fleet Ball. The movie I'm working on has had no option but to schedule certain scenes for the three days of the convention. I'll miss all of you terribly and will of course be thinking of you. On the brighter side, there are a couple of pluses. The new book, in which Alice and almost everyone features, is not quite ready - it will have to wait till next time. Also, my part in this movie is a thoroughly disreputable character! Love to you all and see ya. -- Michael Sheard.

Michael in Lucasfilm Magazine
Michael was featured in the July/August Issue of the LUCASFILM official magazine from France. The article is printed in French but Ani Skylover and Darth Imera of SithClan.qc.ca were nice enough to translate the entire thing for us. Here's the picture and the translation:

Michael Sheard and Ronald Lacey: Reshufflings

The actor Michael Sheard, who plays Admiral Ozzel in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, had originally auditioned for the role of the Gestapo officer, Toht, in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Eventually, the role was given to his friend Ronald Lacey: "It suited him better," explains Sheard, "so I played the German submarine captain. In the original script, he had to appear in a lot of scenes."
But because of delays in the production, most of these scenes were cut. "If you pause the picture, you'll be able to see me screaming, 'dive!'" His voice was dubbed afterwards, however.
Moreover, Sheard was hired for an other role by the time and had to leave the shoot. Spielberg, friendly, told him: "Don't worry, I'll be seeing you..." As promised, nine years later, Spielberg hired him for the role of Hitler in INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, a role that Sheard had already played several times.
Ronald Lacey played Himmler in the same film and saw a few scenes of his, in turn, cut.
Sheard, talks about Lacey: "He was a great guy and a very good friend. He died not very long after that film." Actually, it was in 1991, in London and at the age of 56 that the unforgettable agent Toht left this world.

[Note: Michael wants to clear up a few discrepancies in the above article. Here's what he had to say: "The problem was that the production was off from France to Tunisia (I think it was) and I was contracted to start a TV series. That's why the part was cut, because I couldn't complete it! The guy who shouted 'dive' wasn't me. I've never been re-voiced - except when it's into a foreign language! Ronnie had no scenes cut in 'Raiders' - that's all there was. It was sort of gift a from a very nice man, Spielberg, to a super guy, Ronnie.]
